It began with something as ordinary as a walk with his newborn, and transformed into something extraordinary. Kalvin Bridgewater, a father grappling with a lesser-known form of postpartum depression, didn’t set out to spark a movement. He simply wanted to make it through his early days of fatherhood. But by sharing his truth with other dads in his community, he unintentionally created a space where fathers could openly talk about their mental health, a space that’s now growing across the United States.

Key Takeaways

  • Postpartum depression can affect dads too, mental health struggles are not limited by gender or stereotype.
  • Vulnerability builds connection, Kalvin turned a personal challenge into a community support system.
  • Small actions can spark big change, what started with stroller walks in Dallas/Ft. Worth has now become a growing national movement.
  • Community and shared experience reduce stigma, fathers are increasingly finding support through shared conversation and outreach.

After the birth of his daughter in early 2025, Kalvin Bridgewater struggled in silence. Exhaustion, stress eating, and emotional withdrawal quietly crept in, classic signs of what many mental health professionals now recognise as paternal postpartum depression. Despite society focusing postpartum support almost exclusively on mothers, Kalvin found himself isolated, misunderstood, and unsure where to turn.

One day, Kalvin went for a walk with his baby in a stroller. He was joined by a few other dads, simply dads needing connection, community, and someone who understood what they were going through. Before long, their casual strolls transformed into regular meet-ups, where fathers could talk openly about the emotional ups and downs of parenthood.

That’s when the Daddy Stroller Social Club (DSSC) was born, not as a movement, but as a support group rooted in empathy, shared experience, and practical mental health advocacy.

“Because fatherhood is better together,” the group’s motto reads, encapsulating their mission to break down stigmas surrounding mental health and help fathers access the support and education they need.

From its beginnings in Dallas/Ft. Worth in June 2025, the DSSC quickly grew beyond stroller circles. The meetings started drawing 75–100 dads, and soon chapters began popping up in cities across the country, from Atlanta to Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and more.

Across TikTok and Instagram, the response was overwhelmingly positive:

One commenter wrote: “This movement is powerful and priceless.”

Another supporter highlighted the misinformation many men face:

“This is great, men go through their own postpartum journey! Let’s continue to normalise this.”

On an Instagram reel shared by DSSC, a follower remarked how this club is dismantling harmful myths about masculinity:

“Propaganda we’re not falling for: boys will be boys / toxic masculinity / gender roles…”

These voices reflect a broader shift: people are finally opening up to the idea that mental health support isn’t just for one gender, it’s for everyone.

Mental health isn’t a one-size-fits-all issue. Research shows that societal norms about masculinity often discourage men from discussing emotional challenges, leading many to suffer in silence. Across the globe, from support groups to online movements, voices like Kalvin’s play a crucial role in breaking down those barriers.

By simply walking, talking, and refusing to stay silent, Kalvin sparked something far bigger, a compassionate conversation that’s helping dads everywhere feel seen, understood, and supported.

Stories like this remind us that change doesn’t always start with grand gestures, sometimes it starts with honesty, courage, and community.

At Simply Wholesome, we celebrate stories that restore faith in humanity and remind us we’re not alone in our struggles.
