Key Takeaways

  • Asher Watkins, a 52-year-old millionaire from Dallas, Texas, was killed by a Cape buffalo during a hunting expedition in Limpopo Province, South Africa on August 3, 2025.
  • The safari was organized by Coenraad Vermaak Safaris in the 50,000-acre Bambisana concession, a well-known area for big game hunting.
  • The buffalo, often nicknamed “Black Death” for its size and aggression, charged suddenly and fatally gored Watkins while he was tracking it with guides.
  • The tragedy occurred despite the presence of professional hunters and trackers; authorities and the safari company called the incident a devastating but unexpected accident.
  • Social media users reacted strongly, with many focusing on the ethical implications of trophy hunting and celebrating the buffalo’s survival.

Asher Watkins, a wealthy ranch investor and longtime big-game hunter, traveled to South Africa in late July 2025 for a luxury hunting safari costing approximately $7,500–$10,000 USD.  The expedition, organized by Coenraad Vermaak Safaris, took place in the Limpopo Province’s Bambisana concession, a region known for dangerous game hunts.

On Sunday, August 3, 2025, while tracking a massive Cape buffalo bull weighing over 1.3 tonnes, a species reputed to cause more human fatalities in Africa than lions, rhinos, or crocodiles, the animal charged at Watkins unexpectedly.  Despite being accompanied by experienced guides and a tracker, Watkins was fatally gored and died at the scene.
