Zeke Smith/wikipedia

For decades, Michael Jordan has been celebrated as one of the greatest players in the history of the National Basketball Association. But in recent years, the basketball legend has been building a very different legacy, one focused on expanding healthcare access for people who cannot afford it.

In partnership with Novant Health, Jordan has helped open several medical clinics in his home state of North Carolina designed specifically for uninsured and underserved patients. The latest addition, his fourth clinic, opened in February 2025 in Wilmington, North Carolina, continuing a project that has already changed the lives of thousands of residents.

Key Takeaways

Michael Jordan partnered with Novant Health to build clinics for uninsured patients in North Carolina.

The fourth clinic opened in February 2025 in Wilmington, North Carolina.

The facility includes 12 patient rooms and primary care services for underserved residents.

Jordan previously donated $10 million to expand the project.

The clinics help thousands of people receive healthcare they otherwise could not afford.

The newest facility, known as the Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinic – East Wilmington, officially opened its doors on February 19, 2025 in Wilmington, North Carolina.

The clinic spans about 7,300 square feet and includes 12 patient rooms, allowing a full team of healthcare professionals to provide essential primary care services.

Patients visiting the clinic receive access to:

Primary care physicians

Health screenings and routine medical care

Support from a community health worker

Guidance on social services and community resources

The goal is not just to treat illness but to connect patients with broader support systems that can improve long-term health and stability.

Jordan grew up in Wilmington, North Carolina before becoming an international sports icon. For him, supporting healthcare access in the region is deeply personal.

His clinics were created specifically to help people without health insurance, a group that still includes millions of Americans. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, about 27.1 million people in the United States were uninsured in early 2024.

For many individuals in underserved communities, even basic medical appointments can be difficult to access due to cost, transportation issues, or lack of nearby clinics.

Jordan’s project aims to remove those barriers.

After the early success of the first clinic, Jordan made a $10 million donation to expand the initiative with additional locations.

Those funds helped create multiple clinics across North Carolina, including two clinics in Charlotte and two clinics in Wilmington.

Each location was selected based on community need and limited access to primary healthcare services.

The clinics also help reduce the pressure on hospital emergency rooms by providing regular primary care to people who might otherwise delay treatment until a crisis occurs.

One of the most meaningful outcomes of the clinics is that many visitors are seeing a doctor for the first time in years, or even for the first time in their lives.

Healthcare providers at the clinics have reported that numerous patients had previously avoided medical care because they couldn’t afford insurance or routine visits.

Now they can receive:

Preventive checkups

Chronic disease management

Medical advice and prescriptions

Referrals to specialists if needed

For families who previously had no consistent healthcare access, these services can dramatically improve long-term health.

While Jordan is best known for his achievements with teams like the Chicago Bulls and his six NBA championships, projects like these show another side of his influence.

His clinics demonstrate how athletes and public figures can use their resources to address real social issues.

Healthcare access remains a major challenge in many communities across the United States. By investing in local clinics, Jordan has created a practical solution that helps thousands of people receive the care they need.

Reddit

“Good people doing good things need to be uplifted more often.”

Another user wrote:

“The most admirable thing is how low-key his philanthropy efforts are.”

Facebook and Instagram users also praised the initiative, with many saying it showed how celebrities can create real change when they invest in community healthcare.

Access to healthcare can transform entire communities. If this story inspired you, share it with someone who believes sports icons can make a difference beyond the game.

Key Takeaways

Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy helped rescue dozens of dogs from a South Korean meat farm.

The mission was part of a Humane Society International campaign to close dog farms and rehome animals.

Kenworthy personally adopted one puppy named Beemo.

His actions helped raise awareness about animal welfare worldwide.

The story highlights how compassion and advocacy can create real change.

Kenworthy, a 2014 Olympic silver medalist in freestyle skiing, has long been known for his love of animals. But his visit to a dog meat farm in Siheung, Gyeonggi Province, near Seoul, became one of the most emotional moments of his career away from the slopes.

In February 2018, while attending the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, Kenworthy visited a dog meat farm with Humane Society International (HSI) alongside his boyfriend, actor Matthew Wilkas. The visit was meant to raise awareness about the conditions many dogs face in the industry.

What he saw shocked him.

Dogs were confined in small wire cages, exposed to harsh weather conditions and packed tightly together with little room to move. Kenworthy later described the place as one of the most heartbreaking environments he had ever witnessed.

Credit: gus kenworthy/instagram

Despite the terrible conditions, the dogs were still gentle and eager for affection, something that deeply moved him during the visit.

The visit was part of a larger rescue effort led by Humane Society International, which worked with the farm owner to permanently close the facility. As part of the operation, more than 80 dogs were rescued and prepared to be relocated to new homes in the United States and Canada.

The organization has used similar agreements to help farmers transition to other livelihoods, such as growing mushrooms or peppers, while shutting down dog farms and saving animals from slaughter.

For Kenworthy, the mission wasn’t just about raising awareness. It became personal.

<iframe title="Aww!

While touring the farm, Kenworthy and Wilkas met a small gray-and-white puppy they instantly connected with. They decided to adopt her and named her Beemo.

After vaccinations and quarantine, Beemo was transported to North America, where she joined Kenworthy’s family.

Kenworthy later explained that the moment he picked her up, he knew she would come home with him.

He also used his platform to highlight the larger issue, noting that millions of dogs are still raised for meat in parts of the world and that the rescue effort was meant to encourage humane solutions for both animals and farmers.

Credit: gus kenworthy/instagram

Kenworthy’s rescue work didn’t begin in South Korea.

During the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, he gained international attention after rescuing five stray puppies he found near the Olympic village and bringing them home.

That earlier experience sparked his long-term commitment to animal welfare.

Beemo became a beloved companion for Kenworthy and quickly gained fans online through social media posts showing the pup adjusting to her new life.

Although Beemo later passed away due to a congenital heart condition, Kenworthy continued advocating for rescued animals and later adopted another dog connected to the same rescue effort.

For him, the mission was never about a single dog, it was about drawing attention to the larger issue of animal welfare.

When Kenworthy shared photos and stories about the rescue mission, people across social media responded strongly.

Instagram comments

“Thank you for giving these dogs a chance at life.”

“This is the kind of hero story we need more of.”

Twitter / X

“Using Olympic fame to help animals, respect.”

“Dogs are friends, not food.”

Reddit discussions

“Celebrities can make a real difference when they highlight issues like this.”

“It’s amazing how one visit changed the lives of dozens of dogs.”

Many people said the story reminded them that compassion can come from unexpected places, even during the intensity of the Olympic Games.

Stories like this show how one person’s compassion can change the lives of many animals. If this story moved you, consider supporting local animal shelters or adopting a rescue pet.

Key Takeaways

In July 1996 at the Atlanta Olympics, Kerri Strug performed a critical vault despite an injured ankle, helping the U.S. women’s gymnastics team win gold.

Her performance became an iconic symbol of perseverance, teamwork, and intentional courage.

Revisiting that moment decades later shows how powerful human determination can be.

Strug’s story resonates across generations as a reminder that hope, support, and purpose fuel resilience.

Public reactions highlight how her vault inspires people in their own challenges, from gym mats to everyday life.

Strug had injured her ankle during competition. Instead of withdrawing, she returned to the runway, planted her foot, and executed a difficult vault, sticking the landing despite pain, to secure the gold medal for the U.S. women’s gymnastics team. That moment wasn’t just about athletic ability; it was about grit and heart under pressure.

Nearly three decades later, in 2025, that iconic vault resonated again, not on the Olympic stage, but in a reflective, celebratory way that reminded the world why it mattered.

Strug revisited her legendary vault with a new perspective. Instead of being a moment of pain or pressure, it became a story of resilience. Rather than the pain dominating the narrative, what echoed through millions of memories was what her effort meant, not just for gymnastics, but for anyone who has faced fear, doubt, or a challenge that seemed bigger than themselves.

At the 1996 Olympics, the U.S. women’s gymnastics team, known as the “Magnificent Seven”, was vying for its first team gold in Olympic history. Strug’s performance came down to the final rotation. With the gold medal still within reach but her ankle compromised, she attempted a second vault.

She landed it successfully but injured her ankle on impact. Still, she hobbled to one foot and raised her free leg in celebration before being assisted off the mat. The United States won the gold medal by a narrow margin, and Strug’s vault became one of the most replayed and talked-about moments in Olympic history.

In recent years, Strug has spoken openly about that moment, acknowledging both the exhilaration and the pain. Revisiting the vault years later isn’t about reliving injury; it’s about recounting a pivotal experience that taught an entire generation about perseverance, teamwork, and commitment.

She has emphasized that her performance was rooted not just in individual toughness, but in the support of her team, her coaches, and her belief in collective purpose. What she did on the vault was meaningful because it was part of something bigger than herself.

Across social media and public discussion, Strug’s story continues to strike a chord for several reasons:

Many people see her vault as a metaphor for facing adversity, not because she ignored pain, but because she persisted with intention and support. Her moment isn’t just about physical achievement; it’s about choosing to try when you feel like you can’t.

Across platforms, fans and commentators have bounded back to her story when discussing moments of resilience in their own lives:

On Twitter:

“Strug didn’t just stick a landing, she taught us what courage actually feels like.”

“You don’t have to be perfect, just brave.”

“That vault was more than a routine, it was a message.”

On Facebook:

“This reminds me that the challenges we face today can become the stories that define us tomorrow.”

“Kerri wasn’t just strong, she was focused on a bigger goal.”

On Reddit:

“As a gymnast and a parent, I still show this moment to my kids as an example of determination.”

“People forget she was 18, just a kid under enormous pressure.”

Across these reactions, one theme holds steady: Strug’s vault wasn’t just a physical accomplishment, it was a human moment that showed what people are capable of when they believe in something greater than fear.

Kerri Strug’s vault has endured because it connects with emotional truths that go far beyond sport:

It reminds us that bravery isn’t the absence of fear, it’s choosing what matters more than fear. It shows that in moments of uncertainty, courage can emerge when people support one another. And it highlights that some achievements aren’t just remembered for the result, but for the heart behind them.

For many, Strug’s vault continues to be a touchstone, not as a relic of the past, but as a living lesson in resilience.

As children, we often watch our parents make sacrifices we don’t fully understand at the time – but never forget.

For Lindsay Moore, one childhood moment stayed with her for decades.

Key Takeaways

A daughter remembered her father selling his prized football card during financial hardship.

She tracked down the same card and gifted it to him 30 years later.

The emotional reunion went viral online.

Many viewers related to parental sacrifice and the desire to give back.

She was just seven years old when she watched her father walk into a comic shop and sell something he loved: his Dan Marino rookie card. Money was tight, and the card was one of his most prized possessions. To her, it was the first time she truly saw what putting family first looked like.

She quietly made a promise to herself that day: one day, she would get it back for him.

Thirty years passed before the moment arrived.

During a family Christmas exchange, Moore’s father happened to draw her name for Secret Santa. She knew exactly what she wanted to give him.

As he held a small gift bag, a family member read Moore’s letter aloud, reminding him of the day he sold the card and how deeply it had shaped her understanding of love, sacrifice, and responsibility.

embed

“I felt your sacrifice,” she wrote. “It taught me that I would do whatever necessary to make sure my future family never needed anything.”

She added that seven-year-old her would be overwhelmed with joy to know she had finally fulfilled that promise.

By the time the letter ended, her father was already in tears.

Then he opened the bag, and saw the very same football card he had sold decades earlier.

The room dissolved into emotion as father and daughter embraced.

When Moore shared the video online, millions watched, and many immediately understood why the gift meant so much more than the object itself.

Some parents shared their own experiences of selling treasured items to provide for their children. Others described moments when they were finally able to give something back.

Across stories, one theme repeated: sacrifices made for family are rarely forgotten.

Moore later shared close-up footage of the card and the handwritten letter. But for many viewers, the most powerful part wasn’t the collectible, it was the visible realization on her father’s face that his choices, made long ago under pressure, had shaped the person his daughter became.

We may not always be able to replace what our parents gave up. But sometimes, simply showing them that their sacrifices mattered, that they were seen, becomes the greatest return.

And for one father, a small piece of cardboard became proof that love given decades earlier had come full circle.

It’s stories like these that bring people together and remind us of what truly matters. Small moments of care, empathy, and love can leave a lasting impact – not just on those involved, but on everyone who hears them.

During a packed 1997 wrestling event, thousands of fans were focused on the ring.

But one of the biggest stars in the sport suddenly noticed something happening just outside it.

Key Takeaways

During a 1997 WWF match, Shawn Michaels paused the performance to help a frightened boy with Down syndrome being restrained by security.

He broke wrestling’s strict “kayfabe” tradition by leaving character to personally escort the child to safety.

Fellow wrestler Stone Cold Steve Austin acknowledged the moment by respectfully allowing Michaels to reenter the ring.

The clip continues to resonate with viewers as an example of compassion overriding performance.

Shawn “The Heartbreak Kid” Michaels was facing Stone Cold Steve Austin at the WWF King of the Ring pay-per-view – a high-stakes main-event match between two icons of the era. Moments after the action began, Michaels glanced toward ringside and saw security guards struggling with a young fan who had climbed over the barrier.

The boy had Down syndrome and appeared frightened as security tried to pull him away.

Without hesitation, Michaels slipped out of the ring and walked straight toward them.

He gently pushed the guards aside, crouched down to the boy’s level, and offered reassurance. The arena watched in confusion as the performer, known for his arrogant on-screen persona, dropped character entirely to focus on the child in front of him.

For a brief moment, the match didn’t matter.

Embed

Then, in classic wrestling fashion, Steve Austin followed and pulled Michaels back into the storyline, mock-punching him as they returned to the ring. But within seconds, Michaels stepped out again, this time guiding the boy carefully down the aisle himself, waving security away and ensuring he reached safe hands.

Only after the child was safely escorted to his guardian did Michaels return to the match.

Austin, in a subtle sign of respect, held the ropes open to let him back into the ring, acknowledging what had just happened before they resumed the performance.

To many fans, the moment stood out for one reason: it broke wrestling’s most sacred rule.

Professional wrestling has long operated under “kayfabe,” the tradition that performers never break character or acknowledge reality during a show. Especially in the 1990s, maintaining that illusion was considered essential, even outside the ring.

For Michaels to pause a major televised match and drop his persona entirely meant setting aside performance for compassion.

The clip has since circulated widely online, gathering millions of views and heartfelt reactions. Viewers often point out how instinctively protective Michaels appeared, placing himself between the boy and the chaos, shielding him from confusion and fear.

“Legend in and out of the ring,” one person commented.

Others noted the quiet respect Austin showed in holding the ropes, a rare acknowledgment of real life inside scripted spectacle.

In a world built on performance, the moment revealed something unscripted: a professional entertainer choosing care over character.

And for many fans, that choice remains more memorable than the match itself.

It’s stories like these that bring people together and remind us of what truly matters. Small moments of care, empathy, and love can leave a lasting impact – not just on those involved, but on everyone who hears them.Find more meaningful, feel-good stories on Simply Wholesome and stay connected with moments that uplift and inspire.

Credit: U.S Department of war

Sometimes a single moment defines a lifetime, not because it was planned, but because instinct and love for another human being took over.

For US Marine Corps Corporal William Kyle Carpenter, that moment came in November 2010, on a rooftop in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. In the middle of a Taliban attack, Carpenter and his fellow Marine, Lance Corporal Nicholas Eufrazio, were holding their position when a grenade was thrown directly at them. With no time to think and no regard for his own safety, Carpenter moved toward the grenade, placing his body between the blast and his friend.

Credit: U.S Department of war

Key Takeaways

In 2010, US Marine Cpl William Kyle Carpenter shielded a fellow Marine from a live grenade during combat in Afghanistan, saving his life at the cost of his own health.

He endured years of recovery, including more than 40 surgeries, extensive rehabilitation, and permanent injuries, demonstrating remarkable resilience beyond the battlefield.

In 2014, he was awarded the Medal of Honor, recognizing not only his bravery in combat but his strength, humility, and perseverance afterward.

Carpenter spent five weeks in a coma. When he awoke, his life had changed completely. His injuries were severe and life-altering. Over the next two and a half years, he lived largely in hospitals, enduring countless surgeries, skin grafts, and intensive rehabilitation. He had to relearn how to do things most people take for granted, including walking, eating, and even putting on his own socks.

The explosion nearly killed him. His helmet was shredded. His gear melted. He lost his right eye, suffered a collapsed lung, shattered his jaw, and sustained devastating injuries across his body. When fellow Marines reached him, they found him face down and gravely wounded. Yet even as he slipped into unconsciousness, Carpenter’s first concern was not for himself. He asked if Eufrazio was okay.

That single question speaks volumes.

The transition was humbling. Carpenter later reflected on how difficult it was to go from carrying a machine gun in combat to needing help with the most basic tasks. Yet instead of bitterness, he found perspective. Those long months, he said, reshaped how he viewed life, gratitude, and resilience in ways that no ordinary experience ever could.

In June 2014, nearly four years after the explosion, Carpenter stood at the White House as then-President Barack Obama awarded him the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military decoration. During the ceremony, President Obama emphasized not only Carpenter’s heroism in combat, but his courage afterward, the daily bravery it took to recover, endure pain, and rebuild his life.

The president spoke about the visible scars and the unseen ones, about the surgeries, the brain trauma, and the prosthetic eye. He spoke about Carpenter’s smile, a symbol of the spirit that carried him through years of hardship. He also honored the medical teams who worked tirelessly to save Carpenter’s life, whom Carpenter himself credited with “putting me back together.”

By the time of the ceremony, Carpenter had been medically retired from the Marine Corps and had begun a new chapter as a full-time student at the University of South Carolina. His uniform had changed, but his sense of purpose had not. He carried forward not as a symbol of war, but as a living example of sacrifice, friendship, and quiet strength.

Carpenter became one of only a small number of living veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts to receive the Medal of Honor. Yet what set him apart was not how he spoke about heroism, but how little he claimed it for himself. He consistently framed his actions as instinctive, something anyone would do for a fellow Marine.

But history tells us otherwise. Acts like his are rare not because people lack courage, but because true selflessness demands everything in a single instant.

Today, Carpenter’s story stands as a reminder that heroism does not end when the battle does. Sometimes the greatest bravery comes afterward, in recovery rooms, in physical therapy sessions, and in choosing hope when life has been irrevocably altered. His journey reflects not only the cost of service, but the enduring power of resilience, gratitude, and brotherhood.

If stories like William Kyle Carpenter’s, stories that honor courage, compassion, and the quiet strength of the human spirit, resonate with you, you’ll find many more at Simply Wholesome. Our platform is dedicated to sharing meaningful, uplifting historical and real-life stories that remind us of what truly matters: sacrifice, kindness, and the enduring capacity to rise after hardship.

Credit: 3to1fitness/instagram

For many people, losing weight is a struggle. For Cole Prochaska, it became a life-changing journey.

Cole, a 40-year-old man from Saint Matthews, South Carolina, once weighed as much as 585 pounds, a number so high his scale couldn’t even register it.

He carried that weight for most of his life, battling overeating, sedentary habits, and the emotional toll that often comes with being overweight.

Credit: 3to1fitness/instagram

Key Takeaways

A South Carolina man lost an extraordinary 361+ pounds naturally, transforming his health and life.

After reaching his weight-loss goal, he is now seeking help to fund surgery to remove excess skin.

His GoFundMe has already raised more than $76,000 toward a $100,000 goal.

His story has resonated with people worldwide who face similar challenges.

But Cole refused to quit on himself. Instead of surgery or quick fixes, he chose patience and persistence. He started by walking. Just a little at first, then a bit more each day.

He changed what he ate, cutting out sugary drinks and snacks and replacing them with healthier choices. He began exercising. First slow, then with more intensity at the gym. He stayed disciplined. Step by step. Day by day.

With determination and hard work, Cole lost more than 361 pounds, shedding what he once described as the weight of “three men” off his body.

Today, he weighs about 226 pounds, a dramatic transformation that not only improved his physical health but also changed his life.

Yet even after achieving what many would call a miracle, Cole still faces a challenge most people don’t think about: excess skin.

When the body shrinks after major weight loss, the skin doesn’t always bounce back. It can hang loosely, fold over itself, and make everyday life harder than it should be. This is a reality for many who reduce significant weight.

For Cole, that leftover skin isn’t just cosmetic. It affects his comfort, his confidence, and his ability to fully enjoy the life he’s worked so hard to reclaim. He has said being “trapped” by the extra skin makes it hard to run and even affects what clothes he can wear comfortably.

Credit: 3to1fitness/instagram

So he took another courageous step.

In April 2024, Cole launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for multiple skin removal surgeries, a costly process that doctors estimated could require months of recovery and long stays in California after each procedure.

He was honest about his fears. He posted photos showing the excess skin he lives with every day. He shared his story openly, not just to ask for help but to show the world how far he’s come.

People responded.

Support poured in.

Strangers donated.

More than $76,000 has been raised toward his $100,000 goal, a figure that will help pay for the surgeries he needs.

Cole’s journey has struck a chord with many online. Followers cheer his progress. People message him about their own struggles. Others say his honesty has inspired them to start their own paths to better health.

His story isn’t just about weight loss. It’s about persistence. It’s about resilience. It’s about the reality that every part of change, physical and emotional, can be difficult. And it’s about facing every challenge, one step at a time.If stories like Cole’s, ones of determination, vulnerability, and transformation, move you, you’ll find many more like them at Simply Wholesome.
Credit: NHL

Hollywood star Will Ferrell brought extra fun and flair to a recent NHL game, but not in the way most fans expected. On January 1, 2026, the actor and long-time Los Angeles Kings supporter showed up at the Crypto.com Arena dressed from head to toe in NHL referee gear.

Key Takeaways

Will Ferrell showed up at a Los Angeles Kings hockey game dressed in full NHL referee gear and playfully “called penalties” from his seat.

He was attending the game between the Kings and the Tampa Bay Lightning at Crypto.com Arena on New Year’s Day.

Ferrell joked about being “nimble” and ready to step in if the real officials needed a break.

The actor stayed in character, joked about training the referees, and even tested a whistle between periods, much to the amusement (and mild concern) of fans.

This playful appearance continues Ferrell’s tradition of bringing humor and fan energy to Kings games.

Ferrell wasn’t officiating on the ice. He wasn’t holding a real whistle for the players. But from his seat near the glass during the Kings vs. Tampa Bay Lightning matchup, he made fans laugh and drew attention by playfully “calling penalties” on the arena video board, pointing at imaginary infractions and mimicking referee signals throughout the game.

The 58-year-old comedian explained his outfit in his signature humorous style during an interview with Kings reporter Carrlyn Bathe. Ferrell said he’s “always been in support of the NHL referees” and joked that he’d even trained the officials for the night, calling them his “prize students.”

In a playful twist, he also said he was ready to step onto the ice if needed. “You never know if one of these guys go down, I may have to put on the skates and get out there,” he quipped, despite admitting it had been many years since he last skated.

Ferrell’s referee costume wasn’t just for show. Between periods, he even gave a whistle a try, though the Kings organization reportedly asked him not to use it during actual play, something he took in good humor.

This isn’t the first time Ferrell has had fun with hockey culture. Last year he dressed as Buddy the Elf at a Kings game, and he’s been seen many times in the crowd with themed outfits, face paint, or spirited cheers that delight fans and media alike.

At the January 1 game, Ferrell’s presence added a lighthearted touch to the sport. His acting background in comedy and his genuine love of the Kings came together in a moment that fans described as funny, unexpected, and authentically spirited.

Whether you’re a die-hard hockey fan or just enjoy a bit of fun in the stands, Ferrell’s referee bit was a reminder that sports can be both competitive and joyful, and that sometimes a famous face in the crowd can make game night even more memorable. If stories like this, full of sports, smiles, and moments that make people laugh together, resonate with you, you’ll enjoy what we share at Simply Wholesome.
Credit: longeviquest/Instagram

After more than eight decades together, Lyle and Eleanor Gittens have set a remarkable record that celebrates love, commitment, and longevity. The Miami couple, now aged 108 and 107 respectively, has been married for 83 years, earning them recognition from Guinness World Records as not only the oldest living married couple by combined age but also the oldest ever documented.

Credit: longeviquest/Instagram

Key Takeaways

Lyle and Eleanor Gittens have been married for 83 years, earning them the Guinness World Record for the oldest married couple ever (by combined age).

Lyle is 108 years old and Eleanor is 107, and they live in Miami near family.

Their secret to a long marriage? Simple and heartfelt, they love each other.

Their life together has spanned world events, family growth, careers, and lifelong partnership, a rare example of enduring commitment.

Their story began in 1941, when the two met as students at Clark Atlanta University. Lyle was on the basketball team, and Eleanor was at a game to support a friend when their paths crossed. They fell in love quickly and married the following year, on June 4, 1942, when Lyle was granted a short pass from military duties in World War II.

Their early years were shaped by the war. Lyle served in Italy with the 92nd Infantry Division, while Eleanor moved to New York City and carried on with life, including raising their first child, while writing letters to her husband overseas. Many of those letters were heavily censored due to wartime policies, but the connection endured.

After the war, the couple returned to civilian life and settled in New York City. They built a family together, welcoming daughters Angela and Ignae, and a son, Lyle Rogers. The Gittens family later took civil service jobs in the city and became active in community life. In her later years, Eleanor even earned a doctorate in Urban Education from Fordham University at age 69, a sign of her lifelong curiosity and resolve.

In recent years, their daughter moved them to Miami so they could be close to family as they aged. Though Lyle sometimes misses their old home in New York, the couple says they are happy and content.

Credit: longeviquest/Instagram

When asked about the key to a marriage that has lasted longer than most people live, the Gittenses offered a simple answer: love.

Eleanor told LongeviQuest, the organization that verifies world record titles, “We love each other.” Lyle echoed her sentiment just as plainly: “I love my wife.”

Their enduring bond resonates with many people because it’s grounded in something deeply human and relatable. While they have undoubtedly faced challenges, their story is a reminder that affection, partnership, and mutual respect are central to a lasting relationship.

The couple also shared a bit of everyday life that may have contributed to their closeness: small routines, shared meals, and enjoying conversations with each other and loved ones. In interviews, they’ve laughed about enjoying a drink together or simply spending quality time side by side, habits that helped make ordinary days meaningful.

The Gittenses’ marriage has spanned historical eras, social changes, and major world events. From World War II to the digital age, they have witnessed nearly a century of transformation, together. Their record-breaking union is not just about longevity, but about growth, partnership, and shared life experiences that continued long after most couples might part ways.

In a world where relationships often face pressure from hectic lifestyles and changing cultural norms, Lyle and Eleanor’s story stands out. Their devotion reflects a simple truth: lasting love is built day by day, choice by choice, and moment by moment.
